Chef 360 Platform key capabilities

Chef 360 Platform organizes its services into four core areas: Node Management, Chef Courier job execution, Chef Declarative State Management (DSM), and platform services. Use this page to check whether the platform covers the work your team needs to do, then follow the links to the guides for each capability. For an overview of how these areas fit together, see What is Chef 360 Platform?.

Fleet visibility

Enroll nodes into the platform and track their identity, status, attributes, tags, installed skills, and check-ins. Enrollment brings a node under management so the platform can monitor and act on it. Discover assets from existing Chef environments, from other Progress products such as WhatsUp Gold, and from your own CMDB and monitoring tools. Once nodes are enrolled, use node inventory tools—lists, filters, attributes, tags, and cohorts—to organize and find the nodes you need.

See Node enrollment and Node inventory.

Composable job execution

Create composable jobs quickly using shell scripting and built-in skills, and build full playbooks that coordinate the other infrastructure-as-code tools you already use. Chef Courier accepts a job, schedules and delivers its steps to the targeted nodes, and reports back status and results, whether you run it once or on a schedule.

See Job execution and Interpreters.

Compliance and remediation

Regularly scan, audit, and remediate your infrastructure using certified industry compliance profiles such as CIS, SOC 2, and CSPM. Chef Courier provides first-class integration with Chef InSpec, so you can run InSpec commands as part of any job.

See the Chef InSpec interpreter.

Configuration management

Store the cookbooks, policies, and node metadata that define your infrastructure’s configuration, so nodes can retrieve and apply the configuration that applies to them. DSM acts as the central repository for that configuration data, so nodes managed by Chef Infra Client can efficiently request and receive it, keeping deployment and management streamlined.

See Declarative State Management and DSM operations.

Extensible content

Use an open partner ecosystem that combines Chef premium content with content from thought leaders such as OSL and MITRE, in formats that are easy to extend and that don’t require specialist knowledge. A skill is an agent that performs an action on a node for a specific outcome, and can be Chef-owned—such as Chef Infra, Chef InSpec, or Chef Courier—or a custom skill you create.

See Skills.

Application delivery

Build, package, and deploy applications from a cloud-native, zero-trust platform with Chef Habitat. Habitat integrates with Chef 360 Platform so you can manage the skills built from your Habitat Builder packages.

Identity and access

Manage tenants, organizational units, users, roles, and policies, and connect Chef 360 Platform to your existing identity provider for single sign-on. Chef 360 Platform is multi-tenant, so you manage infrastructure through organizational units within each tenant. Platform services also provide the API gateway, licensing, and notifications that support your organization, along with the web UI you use to sign in and register your workstation.

See Administrators and Security model.

Flexible deployment

Run Chef 360 Platform as a service hosted by Progress, or deploy it in your own infrastructure, including air-gapped environments.
